"...I stood beneath the dried carcasses peering into the dark tent.  The sun beat heavily upon my back, sapping all strength and will to bargain.  The fine dust of the Ooldyuh marketplace filled my mouth and nostrils.  The merchant spoke quickly, a blend of the Old tongue and some caravan lowspeak.  I placed my hand on the book's cover replying '500, no more.'  The man scowled and muttered some more profanities.  I withdrew my hand and stepped backward into the plaza, suddenly aware of the three closing behind me."

Nor Kalas Kandal was the heartland of the Dekàlan Empire.  The largest of the city-states, Kandal once stretched from Taldàna to the Tor'n Nuld, but now only reaches half that distance having been fragmented and claimed in the names of squatter kings.  The kingdoms of Pastar, Olood, and Saranth all sit squarely on lands once considered Kandal.

Following the abandonment of the convoluted Dekàlan alphabet, the name of the domain was changed to Candal (circa 112 DR).  The spelling variation helps to distinguish between periods of reference to the region; the "K" referring (mainly) to the age of the Old Empire.  This is considered retroactive to 1 DR.
