Book of Language - Dekàlan

Dekàlan Grammar

Sentence structure in Dekàlan is basic.  Descriptors follow the subject followed by the action.  Example:  "A tall tree swayed in the strong wind" becomes "A tree tall swayed in the wind strong".  Sentence building follows these rules closely, but word constructions often do not.  Additionally, verbs that act upon an object follow an object.  Example:  "Thank you for the wonderful milled grain" becomes "My thanks for the grain milled wonderfully".  There are no implied "I"s or "you"s.  Changing "thank you" to "you thank" therefore becomes a command, and quite awkward.  To avoid command, the phrase "my thanks" is used.

Building adjectives from nouns is based on the noun's gender.  Gender for any given word is determined by its affiliation with a deity.  Many words have ambiguous gender in which case both are technically correct, but the speaker/writer's geographical region frequently determines usage.  The word for autumn is anonnol (also an'nol).  Autumn is a seasonal word so is commonly associated with Kandlan (fem.).  In Kandal therefore, the word for "autumnal" is anonnolam (also an'nolam).  In Ildûn where autumn is associated with dying, the word is considered of Draun (neut.) and becomes anonnoldra (also an'noldra or an'nold'a).  Masculine words are appended with -an, -der or -drül.  Feminine words are appended with -am, -ar or -eth.  Neuter words are appended with -dra, -lor, -ra or -us.  Additionally, some words are associated with zodiacal signs rather than deities.

Pluralizing nouns is also dependent on the object's gender.  In addition to gender, the plural-suffix is determined by the word's ending (i.e. vowel or consonant).  Most words in Dekàlan follow these rules, but there are always exceptions.  Masculine words ending in a vowel are appended with -din or -in.  Masculine words ending in a consonant are appended with -en or -end.  Feminine words ending in a vowel are appended with -l.  Feminine words ending in a consonant are appended with -a or -al.  Neuter words ending in a consonant are appended with -or or -ord.  Neuter words ending in a vowel are appended with -den or -kin.  The addition of plural-suffixes often changes the syllabic division of a word.

Making a standard object possessive also requires knowing the object's gender. Possessive masculine words are appended with "-en".  Possessive feminine words are appended with an "-em".  Possessive neuter words are appended with an "-or".  Within sentences the object that is possessed follows the owner.

Gerunds are nouns formed from verbs.  Like most other words, gerunds require knowing the root verb's gender.  Masculine gerunds are prefixed with "dor-" or "do-".   Feminine gerunds are prefixed with "ber-" and "be-",  Neuter gerunds are prefixed with "log-" and "lo-".  Examples: dorasrus = crowning, logèrus = eyeing, bemèdara = mothering, loshu = poisoning.  Dekàlan is very forgiving with regard to using nouns as a verb.

Dekàlan Scripts

DekàlanThe Dekàlan script High Davar is an old and involved character set that is understood and used only by educated persons.  In contemporary times the ancient language and script is only studied by scholars, priests and wizards for more simplified alphabets (i.e Othic Davar, Taldàvar...) have been introduced since the fall of the Late Empire.  Many of the contemporary scripts vary only slightly from the original Davar.  High Davar can still be found on old buildings throughout the Old Empire, and scribed in book, scrolls and sword blades that have survived the centuries.

For purposes of clarity, and because it is the standard model for scholars of the Dekàlan language, the High Davar script will be detailed here.

Transliterization

B sets (bah, ba, beh, bi, boh,
bo, bu, brah, bra, brih, bri, broh, bruh, bru)
All Dekàlan words in High Davar are composed of syllabic groupings called "sets".  The High Dekàlan script contains a different symbol for every syllabic set (i.e. a syllabary).  Script symbols are either vowel modified consonants or "blank" symbols modified by a vowel sound.  Each syllabic set contains a consonant character and a vowel modifier.  Often syllabic sets have more than one consonant; these are called symbol groups.  Blanks are placeholding consonant characters that host a vowel modifier.  Various fonts within the High Dekàlan script portray blank symbols differently.

Dekàlan written outside the high script abide by the following conventions.

The "convention of accents" governs the use of grave accents (è) and acute acents (é).  Grave accents regularly are used to tie a vowel to a preceeding consonant in the second, fourth, sixth, etc. couplet within a word with more than two syllables (q.v. Dekàlan).  Accents are not used in the last syllable of a word.  Acute accents tie a vowel to following consonants in words with more than two syllables (q.v. Eshátan) or to separate a vowel-sound from surrounding syllables.  Acute accented vowels usually indicate that the couplet begins with the vowel.  Accenting is further complicated with compound phrases (i.e. Teréth End).  For purposes of counting syllables, compound phrases (two or more words) count as one word.

Apostrophes may also be used to a denote missing "r" (q.v. D'agul) or dropped characters.

The cedilla (ç) is used to replace the sound of "ch", because there is no "c" in the Dekàlan language.  In some dialects of Dekàlan (i.e. Ummòni, Zyrrn) the sound is a harsh "kh", as is similarly used in Ortori.

There is no "f" in the Dekàlan language.  "V" however, when used at a word's beginning or the start of a syllable has an "fv" sound (similar to the German "v").  Those few words that do have an "f" sound are written "ph".  Most of these words are borrowed from Ancient Panàthan (q.v. phlogòstra).

Dekàlan to English Dictionary

Why is are the division of syllables so important?  Because, unless a scribe knows the exact division of syllables, they will construct (spell) the syllable sets wrong in High Davar.
