Book of Weather

Determining weather is tricky as each region has unique factors which contribute to its outcome.  The following general tables should be modified with variables for latitude and biome and an area's micro-climate.  Although the tables below paints a random picture, weather should be seen as part of a greater cycle that includes warm and cold periods, such as the ice age that preceded the rise of Uren at the end of the Second Age.

D&D:  If there is not enough time in a given game to decipher the charts to follow, refer to Table 3-19: Random Weather in the DMGp89 for a quick but generalized fix.  The following charts are loosely based on the "Weather in the World" tables distributed with the "World of Greyhawk™ boxed set" for second edition.

Latitude.  The following tables assume a latitude of N 40°.  For every degree of latitude above 40, subtract 1 degree from the Base Temperature.  For every degree of latitude below 40, add 1 degree to the Base Temperature.  Following this rule, the equatorial Base Temperature for the month of Amarad would be 90, while the polar Base Temperature for the same month would be 0.  The Daily High temperature will occur between 11:00am and 1:00pm daily, while the daily low occurs two hours before Sunrise.

Determining Wind.  Wind should be determined on days without precipitation using an open-ended 1d6 with the first "1" indicating no wind regardless of terrain modifer (see Table 1-3 Terrain).    Wind direction is variable, but available directions must be determined by each specific region, with some directions more common than others.

The seasons reverse in the southern hemisphere.  So whereas Sharak is the dead of winter in Oth, it is the middle of summer in Jadth.

Extreme Temperatures.  Before checking for monthly temperatures, roll on the Monthly Variation table following.  This may further adjust the Base Temperature for a given month.  Normal temperatures are determined with the formulae from the table above.  Below/Above temperatures should add/subtract 5 to the Daily High/Low Adjustment; Severe temperatures should add/subtract 10 to the Daily High/Low Adjustment; and Extreme temperatures should add/subtract 15 to the Daily High/Low Adjustment.

Within a given month, record-setting temperatures will begin on a random day (d30) and last an open-ended number of days equal to 1d6 days + 1d6 for each six rolled.

Terrain.  Further effects on temperature and precipitation may be determined by the effects of terrain and biome.  Refer to the Terrain table below to further adjust the seasonal Weather table above.

Precipitation.  Chances of precipitation for are noted in Table 1-1 Seasonal Weather under Sky Conditions.  The Precipitation modifier in Table 1-3 Terrain gives the total chance of rain, snow, etc. for a given day.
