"...we watched for sometime the Nethereal flame, observing it's ghostly flicker.  Closer, we could see damned faces in its temporary and irratic shape and questioned if it was not the matter of souls leaking through the Kyurada Vor, reacting so violently to this Mortal realm.'"

- translated from Ligrel's Liber III

Book of Dragum Phlogòst'aOr Halam

[form (fire, heat)]

The Art of Draga Phlogòst'a (FLO gohs trah) is the study and use of the element of fire.  Those who study the art are easily identified by their blackened fingers and horrible scarring.

Perhaps the oldest of the elemental arts, Draga Phlogostra is a complex and widely-studied discipline.  Among Humans, it is the most widely practiced elemental art with hundreds of spells fashioned to control the insatiable matter.  The word is derived from the ancient Panàthan word pholom, the fifth element.  Some superstitions hold that phlogostra is a violent reaction between the Nether and the Waking.  This belief lends itself to the practice of using candles to ward off travelers from the Nether.

Notables of Dragum Phlogòst'a include Sakùl Sodän, ...,

Grimoire Infinitum

Spells included here are not those owned or maintained by the sirkùli or cults but rather spells that have fallen into "outside" hands.  Some of these spells have been so widely circulated that ownership is no longer known or recognized.  Sirkùli spells may be found on the individual sirkùla pages.  Cult spells can be found on the individual religion pages.

D&D Spells:

Call of the Living Flame (Combust) Sor/Wiz 2; [Sirkùli Zün]
(kreád'a Phlogòst'a) Combustible objects burst into magical flame which beget True fire.  True Fire burns until item is consumed, or fire is extinguished.  Prep:  ashen remains of a small animal bound and strangled until dead with its own entrails.  (based on Combust, MFp85)

The Consuming Blade (Flame Dagger) Sor/Wiz 2; [Sirkùli Zün]
(kreád'a Phlogòst'a) Summons a blade of magical fire into the magician's hand.  Fire ignited by the Consuming Blade is True Fire.  True Fire burns until item is consumed, or fire is extinguished.  Prep: hand scar from a red-headed Uren-hair wick candle burned into the magician's palm.  (based on Flame Dagger, MFp94)

Fiery Blade of Sakùl Sodän (Burning Sword) Sor/Wiz 4
(sorád'a Phlogòst'a) Adds a magical flame to blade of a weapon.  Prep: passing a metal weapon's blade through a True Fire lit upon a torch (or other source) soaked in rendered animal fat; if the fat of an intelligent race is used, the fire does +1 damage (based on Burning Sword, Drag275p85)

[Ray of Flame] (Ray of Flame) Sor/Wiz 1
(kreád'a Phlogòst'a) ... (based on Ray of Flame, DragAnn5p23)

GURPS Spells:

Lallan's Conflagaration (Shield) M2
(Regular)
(kreád'a Phlogòst'a) ... (based on Shield, GM2p76)

Ligrel's Flame (Ignite Fire) M1
(Regular)
(kreád'a Phlogòst'a) A small incantation and hand gesture summons flame from a nearby inanimate flammable source.  The size of the initial flame determines the cost of the spell.  All of Ligrel's spells are performed with firebeads, a red and orange stone native to southern lands.  The power from these stones may only be used for Draga Phlogostra sorceries.  The cost of the stones are somewhat prohibitive.  Firebeads rarely can contain for than 2-3 points of energy.  (6 pages) (based on Ignite Fire, GM2p36)
Duration 1 second
Cost Special cast; same maintain
Casting Time 3 seconds
Prerequisites Old Othic 13+

Ligrel's Phlogiston (Create Fire) M1
(Area)
(kreád'a Phlogòst'a) Different than Ligrel's Flame, the spell creates or summons fire from no discernable source.  The phlogiston ignites all flammable materials within the effected area.  The spell is cast by a "simple" invocation and the use of firebeads. (12 pages) (based on Create Fire, GM2p36)
Duration 1 minute
Cost 2 cast; same maintain
Casting Time 5 seconds
Prerequisites Old Othic 15+, (Ignite Fire)

Ligrel's Salamadra (Extinguish Fire) M1
(Area)
(skar'ad Phlogòst'a) By using this spell, the wizard causes normal and essential fires to withdraw into their source.  The effect is similar to that attributed to fire salamanders.  This is the only known spell of Ligrel's that does not necessarily require the power of firebeads to cast.  All of Ligrel's spells are performed with firebeads, a red and orange stone native to southern lands.  The power from these stones may only be used for Draga Phlogostra sorceries.  The cost of the stones are somewhat prohibitive.  Firebeads rarely contain more than 2-3 points of energy.  Fires with no source (i.e. magical fires) do require firebeads to extinguish.  The sorcery can be performed with a subtle gesture and a few careful words.  (4 pages) (based on Extinguish Fire, GM2p37)
Duration Permanent
Cost 3 cast
Casting Time 3 seconds
Prerequisites Old Othic 15+, (Ignite Fire)

Sceres's Fire Ward M2
(Area)
(ildá Vorbid) ... (© 1999, D. Stanley)

Sceres's Flame (Phantom Flame) M1
(Area)
(kreád'a Phlogòst'a) A para-creation spell calls forth the essence of fire.  The flame produces heat but causes no damage.  Fire produced by this spell can be affected by other fire spells but cannot be used to ignite materials, or cause real damage in its unchanged form.  The spell component is a pinch of burnt taper.  (5 pages) (based on Phantom Flame, GM2p38)
Duration 1 minute
Cost 1 cast; 1 maintain
Casting Time 3 seconds
Prerequisites (Shape Fire)

Waral's Hesitant Flame M1
(Regular)
(ildá Phlogòst'a) This spell causes a natural (one hex) fire to withdraw into its fuel source, and remain trapped there until a command word of the wizard's choosing is invoked.  When the command word is uttered, the fuel erupts again and continues to burn as it had before.  It is not necessary for the wizard to invoke the command word that completes the process, but it is necessary for the wizard to continue to pay the maintenance costs until the command word is used.  If the spell is not maintained the flame is extinguished.  (5 pages) (© 1999, D. Stanley)
Duration 1 minute
Cost 3 cast; same maintain
Casting Time 1 second
Prerequisites Old Othic 13+, (Extinguish Fire)

Waral's Salamadra (Shape Fire) M1
(Regular)
(ildá Phlogòst'a) This spell fashions a 2' fire-etched lizard from an existing flame.  The fiery lizard-shape follows the caster's mental command, moving and setting fire to that which it comes in contact.  Concentration is required for the salamander to move.  The spell requires a pre-existing fire, and a small clay image of a lizard which crumbles during casting.  (8 pages) (based on Shape Fire, GM2p37)
Duration 1 minute
Cost 2 cast; 1/2 cost maintain
Casting Time 5 seconds
Prerequisites Old Othic 14+, (Ignite Fire)

Zibradar's Immolation M2
(Regular)
(kreád'a Phlogòst'a) A terrible spell that engulfs one enemy's body in roaring flames.  The flames continue to burn for the duration of the spell, or until the target's body is consumed (whichever comes first).  Thankfully, the spell is not easy to cast.  To cast Zibradar's Immolation, the magician must craft a miniature effigy of the target that incorporates a piece of the person (i.e. fingernail, hair, eyelash, tooth, etc.)  The effigy may not be pre-made, as during its construction a small ceremony is performed where the target's name is repeated ad nauseam.  Zibradar's Immolation holds a position of "honor" within the City of Path as one of few spells to be banned from the Pathic Halls.  The spell was used to assassinate King Nilû Kahtil-Zadar the Sixth of Panath in 601 HK.  (© 1999-2001, D. Stanley)

The Wizard's Bookshelf

Phlogostra Ligrel (O.Oth.13)
A dull red book of singed vellum cornered with gold-leaf.  The un-illustrated tome is remarkable in that the pages give off a faint golden glow so that they can be read in darkness.  This interesting enchantment has faded on volumes that have suffered frequent use, like those in libraries.  (Phlogostra Ligrel is a wizard's primer on the physicality and dynamics of flame.  Wizards studying the entire book may learn an appropriate Draga Phlogostra spell of the first Magery automatically, once a spell is found.)  (216 pages)
