People & Races > Halvers (earth)

Overview
There are two kinds of Halvers (Poelo): Standard (-Elon) and True (-Toen).  Each Halver-kin appears as a miniature Uren, without the Dwürden heft and hirsuteness with whom they are frequently confused.  Standard Halvers are renown for both their hard-work and love of food, drink and merriment.  True Halvers are known for their warlike manner and fearless demeanor.  Of the two, Standard Halvers are believed to be the older of the two types, while the emergence of True Halvers is a matter of recent history.

Standard Halvers (Poelo Elon)

The Poelo Elon (po·EHL·o EHL·ahn) are the most Uren-compatible race among non-Urens.  Their appetites for gourmet foods, fine wine and good pipeweed are both legendary and the foundation for many jokes.  Because the Poelo Elon are generally small and sometimes quick, they often have a repuation as thieves.  Standard Halvers can further be divided into three sub-groups: Oddfriends, Stoutfriends and Tallfriends.

Physiology:  For unknown reasons, all Standard Halvers seem able to drink and eat twice what an Uren (of twice their size) can consume before betraying their fullness or drunkeness.  They are also very keen observers with regard to foods' taste and smell, having a palate much more sensitive than their Uren kin.  Most Standard Halvers would prefer to not eat all given the choice of eating a meal without the requisite spices and proper cooking woods.  Few however would make the stance for than a few moments.  Due to their insatiable appetites, few Standard Halvers are considered trim. However, the race starves and dehydrates at twice the rate of other races.

Most Standard Halvers live about twice the number of years that it standard for the Uren (i.e. 120-150 years).

Psychology:  Standard Halvers are a very social race, loving to talk, gossip, listen and spin tales.  The joke that Standard Halvers love "small talk" has been told countless times, but is no less correct.  There seems to be no subject that Halvers are not happy to discuss and bless with their many opinions.  In addition, the Standard Halver memory is amazing when dealing with trivial matters.  Two Standard Halvers can sit and talk about nothing of substance for days, while keeping each other enthralled with their mastery of trivial tidbits.  Many Standard Halvers are entranced by family lineages and when seated with another member of their subrace can (within several hours) deduce how the two are related, or at the least find a common friend, or friend of a friend, or friend of a relative, ad nauseam.

There is a common misconception in most regions where Standard Halvers can be found, that the race as a whole are lazy.  This stereotype is reinforced by images of fat and sleepy Halvers eating and drinking at all hours of the day.  While it is true that the Poelo Elon eat much more often than their Uren neighbors, it is not true that they are layabouts.  The Halver work ethic is nearly as strong as their appetites.

Magic:  Standard Halvers, unlike the Dwürden and Gnorm, are not hindered from using magical items or manipulating the Tapestry.  Some theorize that a similar but opposite warping process to the one that created the Chaosborn may have also created the stable Poelo Elon.  The origin of the race however is lost to the ages.

Standard Halvers > Oddfriends (Odoen Noele)

Physiology:  The wide round pale faces and hollow eyes of Oddfriends has often been attributed to the severe inbreeding of the Othic Odoen Noele (o·DO·ehn NO·ehl·E).  While it is true that the Odoen Noele families seem closely intermixed, there is something more awkward or possibly sinister about this strange sub-race, than that of cousins inbreeding. Physical mutation is disturbingly common among Oddfriend populations.  Very rarely are the mutations beneficial in nature.  Gross outwardly visible abnormalties have led some to wrongly categorize individuals as Chaosborn.

Psychology:   Oddfriends are not the frollicking, happy-go-lucky people their cousins are reported to be.  The Odoen Noele not only seem un-emotional due to their lack of facial expression, but are naturally cynical and distrusting.  Something in their Halver blood keeps them from coming across too severely.  Perhaps it is other races' expectations of what a Standard Halver's demeanor should be that prevents people from perceiving the truly dour nature of the Odoen Noele.

Culture:  Oddfriends live in and around the City of Oth, they are found nowhere else.  They exist on the fringes of Human habitation, producing 80% or more of all the ale that is sold in the dark and dreary City.  Anyone that has tasted Doen Noele ale could tell that Odoen Noele ale is not as good, but it remains a refreshing treat for the inhabitants of Oth.

Language:  Oddfriends speak the Uren tongue of Othic, as well as the older dialect of Old Othic (a derivative of Dekàlan).  Many of the Odoen Noele also speak Oddspeak, which is a remnant tongue of an older Halver language that has been lost with the passing years and long isolation from other Poelo Elon.  Einodie Odien bears a strong grammatical semblance to Eonodoe Elon (the Halver "mother-tongue").

Magic:  One important difference that sets Oddfriends apart from their rounder cousins is that they are fully capable spellcasters.  Odoen Noele wizards however, have limited access to magic.  Uninitiated in the ways of their Dekàlan colleagues, Oddfriend spellcasters are limited in the types of spells they choose to study.  This is key.  It is unclear whether they are unable to cast "vulgar magic" or whether they simply choose not to do so.

Oddfriend sorcerers are called Gimblars, named for the "worthless" rings of odd knickknacks that they carry which serve as material components.  Gimblar magic is much different than Uren and Elve magics.  Not only must an Uren or Elve wishing to learn Gimblar magic need to understand the underlying Halver tongue, but they need to make a Decipher Script check (DC 20).

Standard Halvers > Stoutfriends (Doen Noele)

The most common (in most regions, Oth excepted) of the Standard Halver sub-groups are the Doen Noele (do·EHN no·EHL·e).  The oldest example of Poelo Elon, the Stoutfriends can be found natively on every continent of the World of Teréth End.

Physiology:  Doen Noele rarely reach three feet in height, and never exceed three feet.  The diminutive but round race usually live on the outskirts of Uren civilization or sometimes secluded woodland areas.  It is in these areas that they can retain their own culture and customs, rather than being subsumed by the Uren.

Culture:  Stoutfriends are often master cooks, brewers and growers. Their sweetbread, teas and preserves are of excellent quality. Their ales are smooth and strong, their wines fruity and sweet.  Some claim that adding some honey and some random herbs is enough to call something "Stoutfriend-style", but those that have tasted the true cuisine know there is much more its creation than an abstract confluence of ingredients.  Stoutfriend cooking and brews claim high prices in Uren towns and cities. The only foods that claim higher prices are Elve wines, which the Doen Noele pretend to detest (though cache when they can afford it).

Language:  Stoutfriends are likely to know their own Halver tongue, local Human dialects and perhaps (rarely) the language of local woodland creatures.  Many Stoutfriends are conversant in the nearest Elve dialect, one of the few non-Elve races that have shown the ability to master that language.

Magic:  Stoutfriends can produce no magic.  Stoutfriend priests cast no spells.  Though the Doen Noele have no access to the Tapestry, they may still use general magic articles and those appropriate to their class(es).

Standard Halvers > Tallfriends (Golo Noele)

Physiology:  The tallest of the Halver sub-groups, the Golo Noele (GO·lo no·EHL·e) can grow to be anywhere between three and four feet in height.  Of the Standard Halvers, the Tallfriends mesh most easily with Uren society and populations; often they are confused for short Uren.  Tallfriends have fewer racial benefits than those enjoyed by their shorter cousins.  The Golo Noele are in-effect half-Uren Halvers, a common hybrid in areas where the two live in close proximity.  Tallfriends do not have the metabolism or longevity of their shorter cousins.  Golo Noele over 100 years old are unknown.

Psychology:  Tallfriends are more Uren than even they care to admit.  Most find their Stoutfriend cousins to be a ridiculous, gluttonous and lazy (sharing Uren misconceptions), and will be the first in a crowd to say so should the conversation wax in that direction.  Many find offense in being lumped categorically with their shorter brethren.  Tallfriends sometimes refer to their shorter couins as "Molefriends" for their tendency (in some regions) to dig burrow-homes instead of "proper homes" atop the ground like "decent folk".  These generalizations differ with individuals.

Culture:  In some respects, Golo Noele communities have tighter ties than the communities of other Halver sub-groups.  Because most Tallfriends live among the Uren, most seek the safety and companionship that others of their race provide.  Many of these self-sufficient communities span several neighborhoods within large Uren cities.

Language:  Most Golo Noele can speak various Halver, Dwürden and Uren languages.  It is not uncommon for Tallfriends to know several languages.

Magic:  Tallfriends do not have the same magical limitations as their Oddfriend and Stoutfriend ilk.  The Golo Noele may cast spells normally but cannot cast spontaneously.  For this reason Tallfriends cannot be sorcerers and make poor spell-casting clerics.

True Halvers (Poelo Toen)

The history of the Poelo Toen (po·EHL·o TO·ehn), though not long is unclear.  Poelo Toen are known as "True Halvers".  Halver tales claim that the sub-race has existed since the first appearance of the Poelo in years distant.  The rest of the world however, first became aware of True Halvers within the last millennium.  In that time, the race have has emerged as a military power to be reckoned with.

It is said by Halver storytellers that the Poelo Toen are the guardians or keepers of all Halver-kind.  It is the duty of the True Halvers to make and protect the homes of all Standard Halvers (i.e. a warrior sub-race caste).  If this is true, it fails to explain why the Poelo Toen didn't establish Halver homelands in ages past, waiting instead to appear and seize contested lands.  The most famous of these new homelands is Loeponye Noe.

Physiology:  Physically, the Poelo Toen are not very different from their Standard kin.  It is uncommon to find rotund True Halvers, not for lack of appetite but due to the driven nature of this people.  True Halvers never seem to rest except for sleep.  It is debated (quite heavily) by those that are studying the Poele Toen whether they can indeed be categorized as a separate sub-race at all.  Though the Poelo Toen cannot breed with Standard members of their race, they are sometimes born from Standard Halver mothers.  It is theorized that when the race is in need of its warrior sons and daughters, that many of the next generation are born True.  The reason for this is unclear.  If the Poelo Elon do understand how this works, for once they are not talking.  Poelo Toen have appeared among all Standard Halvers except Oddfriends.

Psychology:  The idea of Halver military might seems fundamentally flawed at first, until one explores those attributes that make the Poelo Toen different from their kin.  First and foremost among the differences between Standard and True Halvers is the fact that the Poelo Toen are absolutely fearless.  Members of the sub-race do not cower from anything, including fear induced by magic (whether true or false).  Additionally, it appears that the Poelo Toen are not only fearless, but that they do not understand weakness of any kind.  Challenges are meant to be overcome.  Surrender is unknown.  Another quirk of the Poelo Toen that distinguishes them early from their Standard Halver kin, is their lack of emotional attachment.  Outward observers sometimes mistaken Poelo Toen children as autistic.

Culture:  Poelo Toen culture is very organized.  When a True Halver is recognized within Poelo Elon society they are removed at an early age to be raised by those that understand and can train them best.

Language:  The Poelo Toen do not have a racial language of their own, usually adopting a local tongue or dialect.  In some regions the sub-race has adopted the Eonodoe Elon.

Magic:  Similar to the Doen Noele, True Halvers can produce no magic.  Poelo Toen priests cast no spells.  Though the Poelo Toen have no access to the Tapestry, they may still use general magic articles and those appropriate to their class(es).
