Book of Ogren

[earth]

The upbringing of Ogren is very much a factor of what they become as adults and how they are treated by societies in which they exist.

Physiology:  It is important to recognize the size of the Ogren.  Most adult Ogren reach nearly eight feet in height and weights from 230 to 500 pounds.  Adult Ogren cannot be mistaken for any other race that is commonly found among Uren.  Ogren normally reach adult Uren height and weight by the ages of six or seven.

Ogren vary in appearance much as Uren do, and often inherit some characteristic of their Uren parent, though the inheritance is usually exaggerated.  A mother with slightly large ears might have a child with massive and hairy ears.  A parent with a bent nose might sire an Ogren with a large hooked nose and large gulfs of nostrils.  Often, as is the case with Ogdar, a natural characteristic may go awry, missing, or multiplied.  It is not uncommon for Ogdar to have more than one nose, three eyes, or six fingers on one hand.  Sometimes Ogdari mutations are more dramatic than this (i.e. two heads, four arms...) but those are rarely found in Ogren.

Uren females do not necessarily have to be raped to be impregnated by Odgar.  Ogdar males exude a powerful masculine aura of sweat and musk that has a chance to impregnate Uren females within its area of effect.  This scenario may seem unlikely except that Ogdar often keep Uren slaves and do not treat their "toys" nicely.  Uren women that have escaped from this slavery have found death shortly thereafter since the Ogren gestation period is only six months.  An Ogren fetus may be killed off in the first four months with a [Remove Disease] spell, after which time only surgery or severe wounding may abort the unborn fetus.   Uren seem to be the only non-Ogdar race receptive to Ogdar fertilization.  D&D:  Uren females who find themselves in close proximity to an active male Ogdar must make a Fortitude save (DC 13) to resist the musk.  Clothed Uren females gain a +4 to their save but should thoroughly wash their clothes afterwards.  Ogren do not have this ability.  Both Ogren and Ogdar females seem to be immune to the fertilizing nature of the musk, though it can act to positively influence their reactions toward the male Ogdar.

Ogren rarely lived past 50 years of age.

Psychology:    Consider an Ogren's mental and emotional capacities to be half of an Uren counterpart of the same age.  Therefore a 20 year old Ogren typically have the maturity of a ten year old Uren.  There are exceptions to this generalization.

Taking all this into account paints the picture of a troublesome and powerful species.  Another important factor in this is that 9 out of 10 Ogren grow without parents, in a minority household, or are raised in a household where one of the parents (usually an Uren female) is the victim of rape by the character's Ogdar father.  Since most Ogdar females are considered vile to Uren male sensibilities, Ogdar females rarely give birth to Ogren.

Due to the physical disparity between Ogren and Uren females, the Uren mother rarely survives the birthing ordeal.  If it becomes "obvious" to the unborn Ogren that the mother will not be able to birth the child, the Ogren have been reported able to eat their way free of the womb.  This horrible (but not uncommon) birthing process lends itself to many psychological problems.  This combined with the guilt, outcasting, anger, and abandonment issues rarely produce table adult Ogren.

Culture:   Ogren born in Uren society are often scorned and shown little pity.  Ogren born in Ogdari society are often killed but sometimes are valued for their superior intelligence (among Ogdar).

The most notable Ogren penalty is their inability to fit well into most societies.

Language:   Most Ogren know the languages of the area in which they were raised.  More intelligent than their monstrous parents, they are still not (on average) as intelligent as their Uren parent.  When raised among Ogdar they commonly may learn Ogdar, Ortor, Gru, or Giant.  An Uren tongue might be learned if a settlement is nearby.  When raised among the Uren, Uren tongues and dialects may be mastered.

Magic:   Few Ogren are competent spellcasters.
