Book of Faeri
Faeri
refers to many classes (subraces) of nature spirits able to manifest into
semi-corporeal form. Being creatures of the Chaos, Faeri range from
benign to malevolent.
Physiology: Although
Faeri manifest in many different forms, there are some shapes which appear
with regularity. It is uncertain how important the corporeal body
is to the Faeri, or whether they can change forms as easily as clothes.
Form does seem to impact their relationship with each other (see culture).
Despite the shape of the Faeri, their form is more malleable than
other creatures.
Faeri range in size from diminutive to Elve
size. Some believe that the Elve are at the upper end of the Faeri spectrum.
The Elve disagree. Some Faeri have wings, some do not. Some
Faeri are lithe, some are obese (for their size). Most Faeri have
slanted almond eyes, wide mouths, and pointed ears (all features associated
with Elve, though often more extreme). There are many that believe
that the Faeri are true Chaosborn,
while the Chaosborn are pre-existing creatures modified by the Chaos.
No one is certain what happens when Faeri die (partly because
it seldom happens). Most believe that their life forces are released
back into the Chaos and that their personalities cease to exist. Whatever
it is that happens, the Faeri survival instinct is second to none.
Psychology:
A complete explanation of the psychology of the Faeri would take volumes.
Some Faeri seem to be very intelligent, while many seem to act on
base instinct. Faeri personality seems to be an expression of the
Chaos from which they manifest. Though there are good Faeri, there
are evil Faeri as well. Faeri are xenophobic, fearing all those that
are not Faeri. Lesser Faeri are extremely curious and mischievious,
two traits that most often cross their paths with those of the non-Faeri.
Another trait that draws the Faeri from their private worlds is their
hyper-sexuality.
Culture: Faeri culture
is determined by Faeri form. Form establishes an inherent pecking
order among the Faeri. Faeri dwell inside a different "world"
from other creatures on Teréth End. Believed by some to be
pockets of Chaos, the Faeri realms are wide ranging kingdoms that overlap
the "real" world, but only meet at special places and times. Faeri
seem to be tied to their realms, only able to escape for short periods without
"fading". Though separate, the realms seem tied to "read"
world features such as sacred mounds, ancient forests, unspoiled lands,
etc. When these areas are despoiled, the effect on the dependant Faeri
realm is immediate. Few activities raise the ire of the Faeri than
tamperings such as these. In situations where the realms are imperiled,
Faeri (evil and good) have been known to unite in order to preserve their
"world". During these "wars", there is little
to differentiate the good from the evil Faeri.
Language: Faeri speak
their own language, Faeri. The language is impossible for most mortal
speakers to pronounce though some few have learned to understand it. Those
in the extroardinary position to study the language are almost inevitably
drawn into Faeri madness, often disappearing from the mortal world for years
and centuries at a time.
Magic: There is little
about Faeri that is not magical. Being in tune with the Chaos, the
Faeri are adept at shaping and redirecting its ebbs and flows. The
Faeri believe that the Chaos is their life giving force and therefore will
never seek the destruction or cessation of magics, instead preferring to
change the flow of magic into another form, i.e. A sorcerer casts a stroke
of lightning at a Faeri who changes the bolt into a waft of perfumed air
(rather than dispelling it outright).
