"...[name] stood in the [name2] Hall, a hundred
peers watching from the galleys above. She called her Provider's
name, and all could feel the power she commanded. [name3] summoned
his wards, but all that watched knew his efforts were in vain.
The next name she offered was his, and the misery of [name3]
was legend."

Before the Uren settled the lands
above the Tor'n Evalshat, the Urdari
Kingdoms were already centuries old. In the ensuing
millennia Uren tribes have invaded and built towns and cities
on their lands, the Elve have made bloody war in their forests
and the Ortor have raided their farms and taken their people
into the mountains as slaves. All of this time, the
Urdar have waited for the day when a leader will rise among
them and lead them to greatness. In the recorded past
of the Urdar, three Urgru have been crowned. Of the
three, great words are inscribed upon the stones of the forest
and cliffs but none have led their people to the fabled promise
of legend.
Though small by Uren standards, each gnot is
a self-sustaining community and kingdom run under a feudal
system. The ties and lineages of each gnot are many
centuries old. Gnots are so tightly spun socially that
each member of a kingdom can usually explain how he is related
to kings and heroes of yore.

People
The Northwoods Urdari are a very spiritual
people. They believe that their ancestors work from
beyond the grave to make their lives easier and to lead them
to "promise". Over the course of thousands
of years this belief has led them to chose, directed by their
ancestors, a select few leaders dubbed Urgru who bind the
kingdoms together. In almost two thousand years only
three have been chosen. Each of these has died without
delivering "promise" and so the kingdoms have separated
until a time when the next may be chosen. In recent
years, many within the kingdoms have suggested that the outsider
Norgul should be elevated to Urgru status, but the elders
are wary of the newcomer and the fact that she so easily musters
Urdari men and women to do battle against the great City
of Oth. Many have been lost to her campaigns, and
many more have been killed by the retaliatory hunts. There
are whispers among the Urdari elders that Norgul is not only
an outsider, but an impostor!
The current tensions between the Urdari Kingdoms
and the city-state of Oth are not new. For reasons of
tradition the Uren and Urdar have rarely seen eye-to-eye.
Kingdom elders read from the Great Inscriptions that
the Urdar once owned all of the land below the Telàbra
and that the Uren came later and forced them into the dark
forests. The tales from those days tell of great Urdari
heroes that rose up against the Uren invaders but even their
heroes ultimately failed. The elders and the ancestral
spirits with which they held council, instructed the people
to refrain from warfare with the invaders and that the time
for "promise" would come when an Urgr came to lead
them.
Not all of the people are enemies of the Urdar.
A long standing trade is maintained with the people
of Dreg's Brewery to whom the Urdar feel a certain kinship.
Some Uren merchants also do trade with the "ugly
folk" but most keep such business private for fear of
angering customers and fellow businessmen.
