"Too often days swiftly pass / Weeping in the evening grass / There just is not enough time / Forthings you dreamt you'd do / The hours still drift by.

"Too many years, too high a cost / Too many lessons earned but lost / And still you complain all the time / Cursing the days before you / Lamentng the days gone by.

"And finally laying in your bed / Staring skyward, nearly dead / It all floods back one last time, / The chances that you left behind / But alas there's little left to do / ... but cry."

Dirimoran song

Children  Valus Greymane

Saldus (Greymane, of Botton Liche) was born to poor fisherman in a small village north of Oth along Argud's Sound.  The eldest of five siblings, his father Garad had high hopes for his son and dreamed that he would one day own his own store or boat.  When Saldus's grandfather Arcast died in 624 DR, his mother gave him her father's sword.  It was a badly maintained rusty short sword that Hurun Arcast had used during many small campaigns against the Urdar of the Northwood.  When Garad came home that evening and found Saldus playing with the sword his heart sank, for he could see that the boy was dreaming of being more than a fisherman.

When old enough to join a levee, young Saldus joined a small group (in the Spring of 628 DR) that was headed into the Dnur Fen.  He'd talked about joining the levee all winter, and when the time came to go his father and mother presented him with a suit of leather armor that they'd saved silver for, for years.  Under the command of yeoman Dazan Kordan, Saldus and eighteen others marched north into the swamp to find and kill ghûls.  It didn't take long before young Saldus found himself in the thick of combat.  Yeoman Kordan led them to an old graveyard he knew well, and by sundown they could hear the yips and howls of the whulds searching across the marshes for living flesh.  That night was one of the longest Saldus could remember as one by one the foul undying ghûls came into their camp and were hacked and skewered, screaming as they perished.  Over the night's course three of their members were dragged into the marsh and never seen again.  Their leader explained that losing only three had been a good night.  With the hands of seven ghûls, they returned to Oth the next morning and were duly compensated.  Saldus did not join Kordan on his next mission, he did not trust the man or his instincts.  His concerns were justified less than a month later when a returning levee told of finding Kordan's missing group.  The yeoman and eight of the people who he'd joined on that first mission had been massacred near the same spot they'd camped one month before.

...

Saldus's most distinguished service came by direct order of the High Lord Edgur Rott the Third of Oth.  In the Winter of 652 DR, Saldus was ordered to act as escort for Thr. Jak of Candan, the first thard of the High Lord's sister Nolda, the Urdari Queen.  Following a tedious winter in the marsh of Candan, Saldus was given further instruction to command a force of soldiers and find a missing caravan in the Tor'n Evalshat.  Once the caravan was found, he was to ensure that a small box containing a message for the High Priestess of Taldàna was to make it to the southern city.  He and his assigned soldiers would be accompanied by Thr. Jak of Candan and his party.  Once he reached Taldàna however the High Priestess relieved him from his duties, sending him back to High Lord Rott with the message that she would not support war within the Old Empire.  Returned to the City of Oth, he was received graciously by the High Lord who had been expecting the same response.  For his services and the generosity he showed the families of those soldiers that had perished (through his son, Valus), he was decorated with the Ormic Crown (Medal of Loyalty; Order of the Iron Crown) and made Commander of the Old Defenders.

Aside from mundane possessions, Saldus wore and carried:  banded mail armor, a heavy mace, a light crossbow, a close-faced helmet, a large steel shield (gray-bordered sable with white raven), a Hammer of Roth holy medallion, a cloak (sable with gray crown on reverse) and a Scarf of Zalan (a gift from his mother).  While traveling with the party, he carried the Shield of Argum the White (large wooden shield +3) and the terrible sword of Bocor, Utharad (though it is not believed he knew of the sword's true nature).
