"...[name] stood in the [name2] Hall, a hundred
peers watching from the galleys above. She called her Provider's
name, and all could feel the power she commanded. [name3]
summoned his wards, but all that watched knew his efforts
were in vain. The next name she offered was his, and the
misery of [name3] was legend."

For centuries, the coasts north of the Othic city-state have been home to the
pirate kingdoms of the Côte du Nord (the North Coast, the Pirate Coast...).
Here, on the edges of the great Arduwu, Uren settlers have carved themselves
a chain of small kingdoms between the vestiges of the Old Empire and the flourishing
ports of Vulmura. Though ancient history tells of people living among the
crags and rocky ports for millennia, most of the settlers in this region are believed
to be Acentran outcasts, banished from the south after the western occupations
following the Great War. The land available to these hearty people is barren.
Because few dare venture into the bountiful Elve lands to the west, in times
of need most of the kingdoms of the Côte du Nord resort to piracy from one
another and from ships hugging the coast from Vulmura to Teréthor. |

People
The majority of le Côte du Nord's inhabitants
are believed to be descendants of Acentran refugees who settled
this area following fall of the Old Empire and the ensuing
Occupation. The people of this northern coast were banished
from Taldàna, Oth and other locations. Those that
could not blend in, were either killed or pushed north into uninhabitable
lands. It has been told, that in exchange for their "aid"
in the Great War, the Elve granted these desperate folk with
a thread of shoreline. Without resources the people settled
among the rocky crags and sea caves.
The Acentran-Teréthori however were not the
first Uren to settle in eastern Arduwu. When the refugees
arrived at le Côte du Nord, some found old villages and subterranean
complexes carved from the sea walls years before they arrived. Though
most of these locations were long abandoned, a scattered few
remained inhabited by a people who collectively called themselves
the Yzir. Without a written language or coherent oral
tradition it was difficult to determine their history, though
Ulstàra of Ness-Kavr wrote in 78 DR that she believed them to
be descendant of the Othic Ezira. She supported her theory
based on a similarity of religious beliefs, most notably a similar
"creation myth". Sadly, her journals are all
but missing and nothing remains of her sources.
Today, the people of la Côte du Nord remain
very similar to their cultural and kingdom kinsmen in Vulmura.
The largest difference between the two is the language which
is blend of their individual Acentran roots, with a hint
of Tradespeak (i.e. Azálari). The language
and its speaker's accents are difficult to mistaken, and have
led to the hangings of many by sound alone. For this reason,
far-sailing travelers from the region train hard to disguise
their accents. |
