"...[name] stood in the [name2] Hall, a hundred
peers watching from the galleys above. She called her Provider's
name, and all could feel the power she commanded. [name3]
summoned his wards, but all that watched knew his efforts
were in vain. The next name she offered was his, and the
misery of [name3] was legend."

Acentyrea > Tarantis (Civilized)
|
Powerful and threatening Tarantis sits
atop the Allyrian Peninsula guarding passage to and
from the Celecaen and Allyrian Seas. Except for
reasons of business, few travel to the ancient state.
Many are the tales of kidnapped travelers pressed
into the service of the mercenary companies which control
a patchwork of old kingdoms and baronies throughout
the land. These same houses send their soldiers
to every charted bay and port for the proper coin. Ostensibly,
the king serves at the pleasure of these rogue-barons.
|
The King of Tarantis has many worries, not the least
of which is the delicate balance of power which he
holds over a partitioned kingdom. His lords
each hold a Right of Governance over their lands which
grant them near-kingly privileges that he cannot revoke.
The only powers the King of Tarantis holds over
his lords is the Tarangyl (an annual tax in the form
of coin, product and service) and the right to muster
armies for defense of the kingdom.
Tarantis maintains tenuous relations with its neighbors,
who recognize the volatile nature and potential of
the kingdom.

- Plains of Sydir. A broken
rocky land that stretches between the Sydirnyn seat
and the mount of Ayr Kadarus. The soil is not
deep, so the region is lush with tall grasses between
outcropping stones. Farming the plains is impossible.
The area has long been ill-regarded as a sanctuary
for bandits and hermits. Historically, the Plains
of Sydir have been used on more than one ocassion
to mask the movement of troops across the Tarantis
midlands resulting in a number of battles among the
stones.

- Hern Dirsthan III (b. 2932,
d. -- YW) is the seated heir to one of the longest
living dynasties of modern Tarantis. Ruler of
the kingdom since the age of 13, Dirsthan III has
shown great political fortitude and skill in his efforts
to maintain a country where his powers and rule are
constantly questioned, if not challenged. In
his third year as Hern, he raised an army to quell
uprisings in his eastern lands (i.e. The Sydirnyn
War). In his fourth year, his armies swept wide
across his kingdom to unseat those that charged him
for their service during the Sydirnyn War. This
is recorded as the Tarangyl War. The result
of this second conflict was the reassumption of several
lands under the crown, including Kadarus and Moran.
The general thought is that Hern Dirsthan's
control of the kingdom will only last his reign and
that his son will have to reassert controls of his
own.
